Kendriya Vidyalaya No.1 Imphal formerly known as Central school Imphal was established in 1964 on the initiative of Late Hawaibam Ranbir Singh, the then Education Secretary, Govt. of Manipur. The school/Vidyalaya opened at Johnstone High School(now Johnstone Higher Secondary school, Imphal) complex with enrolment of students in classes 6 to 8 . The school was shifted to Babupara, Imphal near Circuit Home(now State Guest Home) in 1969. There were no permanent structures of school building. The school ran in temporary shed available. Ultimately the school/Vidyalaya was shifted to the permanent building at the present site in Lamphelpat area measuring 12.13 acres with single floor Assam type tin roofing on 23rd March 1976. The new building was inaugurated by Shri S Krishnamurthy, Deputy Commissioner of Central School Organisation(now KVS) when Shri M S Gill had been the principal.
